China’s military advancements have been attracting global attention, especially with the recent developments in its naval capabilities. The Fujian, China’s first domestically-made aircraft carrier using catapults, marks a significant milestone in the country’s defense technology. As the world’s largest conventionally powered warship, Fujian has embarked on another trial, testing its sophisticated systems and demonstrating China’s growing maritime prowess. This article delves into the intricate details of Fujian’s development, its capabilities, and the strategic implications of China’s expanding naval fleet.

Fujian’s Advanced Sea Trials and Capabilities

The Fujian aircraft carrier, launched on June 17, 2022, represents a new era of Chinese naval engineering. After its maiden trial in May, where propulsion, electrical systems, and other equipment were tested, it set sail for another trial from the Jiangnan Shipyard in Shanghai. The Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration issued a warning for traffic control near the Yangtze River, underscoring the importance of these trials.

Reports suggest that during this phase, the aircraft carrier’s advanced electromagnetic catapults and arresting cables could be tested using fixed-wing jets. This phase is crucial as it marks the first known full operation test of the Fujian’s ship-borne fighters, specifically the J-15T or J-35. These trials are vital in bringing the carrier closer to delivery to the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLA Navy). With Fujian’s entry into active service, China will have three active aircraft carriers, a fleet surpassed only by the US Navy’s eleven carriers.

Revolutionary Catapult Launch System

The Fujian stands out as China’s first domestically-made carrier to incorporate a catapult launch system. This system allows the carrier to launch aircraft with greater efficiency and speed. Unlike its predecessors, Liaoning and Shandong, Fujian is equipped with three electromagnetic catapults, enabling the launch of heavier aircraft and fully loaded jets. This technological leap enhances the carrier’s combat capabilities, making it a formidable force in naval warfare.

China’s J-15T, also known as the Flying Shark, has shown its readiness for takeoff and landing operations on the Fujian, capable of catapult launches and reverse command. The carrier’s larger displacement allows it to carry more aircraft, thus expanding its operational reach. Fujian’s ability to quickly launch jets is a critical advantage, especially during high-stakes military operations.

Integration of Next-Generation Aircraft

One of the most exciting aspects of Fujian is its potential to host advanced aircraft. The electromagnetic catapults are expected to accommodate improved versions of the J-15 fighter jet, as well as new aircraft like the next-generation stealth fighter jet, the J-35. Additionally, the KJ-600, a fixed-wing early warning aircraft, and the JL-10 advanced trainer jet are anticipated to be part of Fujian’s arsenal.

The integration of these aircraft not only enhances the carrier’s versatility but also signifies a shift towards more advanced naval aviation capabilities. The Fujian began training with the catapults in November 2023, launching test vehicles into the sea. The J-15T and J-35B ship-borne fighter jets, variants developed specifically for the catapults, further demonstrate China’s commitment to advancing its naval technology.

Strategic Implications of Fujian’s Deployment

The deployment of Fujian has significant strategic implications for China and the broader region. As China’s naval capabilities expand, so does its influence in the Asia-Pacific, a region already fraught with geopolitical tensions. The presence of a more advanced aircraft carrier bolsters China’s ability to project power and secure its maritime interests.

Moreover, the technological advancements represented by the Fujian enhance China’s military deterrence. As experts suggest, once the carrier enters active service, it will not only complement China’s existing naval assets but also challenge other naval powers. The high frequency and intensity of Fujian’s sea trials reflect China’s determination to ensure its combat readiness, signaling a shift in the balance of naval power in the region.

As the Fujian continues its trials and moves closer to operational status, the world watches with keen interest. This development raises questions about the future of naval warfare and the role of aircraft carriers in power projection. How will other nations respond to China’s growing naval capabilities, and what does this mean for the geopolitical landscape of the future?

    • You should see all the other bogus headlines that pop up: “WW3 Fears….”, “Putin sends chilling WW3…..”. They’re all the same. I systematically block channels like this from popping up on my devices because their reporters can’t report anything- they all parrot whatever mommy and daddy bosses and companies tell them to say. The reporters suck,sm sucks- sometimes I see several news articles with the EXACT SAME cover photo so I block all those agencies. It’s all propaganda to raise gas prices, cause inflation or panic buy. I’m not building a bunker. Who wants to live in a world plagued by war? They can come get me when they’re done with their “condemning” of every other country. They won’t actually do anything but talk rubbish.

    • It is, we have 11 far larger and superior carriers that are deployed, 4 on the way and our carry more planes.
China’s first 2 carriers are a joke and don’t even work.

    • Ha ha ha ha ha ha on

Exaggeration is a understatement. As well as the unmatched comment.

Sure it’s not a good thing that China is building a big navy & I agree they could do some damage to ours if their was a war, but at the end of said war there would be no Chinese Navy, Airforce, or Naval bases. They don’t stand a chance.

All of these articles about Chinese one carrier progress make it sound sooo dramatic. Ridiculous. We have 11 carriers with two more in production. It’s not like China is going to catch up anytime in the next 50 years.

    • It’s a piece of shit with too few aircraft and a dearth of trained pilots. This article is PRC propaganda.

    • China has much fewer than the US. They also have never fought a modern war of any kind. They have no idea what they’re even doing. No one is terribly worried I assure you.

    • The Chinese are 25 years behind the US in aircraft carrier design, maintenance, performance, and lethal ability. However, China’s ability to steal information, technology and hack into US systems will reduce this gap.

    • Not even close and we have 12 major carriers all larger and more powerful and 8 smaller ones that more than match the Chinese one.

    • U.S. aircraft carriers exceed 100,000 tons and the USN has almost 90-years of war fighting and blue water operating experience using carriers, carrier aircraft and their support vessels. It’s a little early to freak out about the Chinese beginnings in this mode of naval warfare but they are definitely on their way to building a threat.

    • I would think it’s a little exaggerated but our us technology should be a bit more advanced than there’s you would think anyways but who really knows the real story

    • China’s ambition to protect its maritime security only can be done with a strong naval strength. It is the world’s second largest economy and China in the last 100 years did not invade any of its neighbors. To have peace it must prepare for war.

      • Wrong about China not poking its nose in other countries’ biz in the last 100 years: Descended into North Korea to block UN forces; colonised Nepal; invaded Vietnam and got its arse beaten back badly; crossed over into disputed Indian territory; threatened Taiwan too many times to mention. I guess you must have been under the effect of too much liquor all the while or perhaps you were not exactly a star at international relations back in your wasted years at school.

    • It’s a piece a crap. Using conventional fuel, as opposed to nuclear power, severely limits it’s use. They spend more time refueling than doing anything else.

    • They are huge which makes them an easy target. Could hit one blindfolded. The most impressive aircraft carriers are those ones you don’t even know are there until you bump your head on one. I don’t know where they are from as I have never seen one but that just makes me more in awe of them.

    • Yep..But,still obviously NOT great, combat ready,TRAINED or advanced enough to handle US (AND NOT at all with its nearby also advanced economic and defense-based allies, but that looking more and more vague or unpredictable now under the new admin.) in term of that only, not even within the Indo-pacific,at least not right away or in days or weeks for that matter and not make it super or hyper costly as well…Yeah..😏🤷‍♂️😅

Thank you for the informative piece. But I’m skeptical about the “unmatched combat readiness” claim.

    • China is feeling its way through with this carrier, getting to know the precise ripples it will have on diplomacy and international relations whenever it does courtesy visits or sails threateningly close to neighbours and disputed islands; or just appears on Taiwan’s horizon. China has always been a huge power. For thousands of years in fact. Given such a long history however, it has been only too natural to have gone into decline from time to time. China is only reclaiming its status. The USA will learn, slowly, that China can be as good and as strong as the USA anytime it starts surging back to peak. Debatably, it might outdo even the USA in all arms in about 50 years. So this Fujian is just a little starter. China is just about starting to wax some now. Unless the USA makes peace with its allies, all the China Sea will be but a China lake. Forr the USA to make peace with its allies, the present set at the White House have first to learn how to curb their tongues, get their act in order and relearn diplomacy, a speciality they are particularly inadept at.

The Fujian looks impressive, but let’s not forget the logistic challenges of maintaining such a large vessel.

  3. No one is panicking except for the kind that panick on a daily basis. It is 180000 ton aircraft Carrier, not 20, not 50.
And you don’t think I’m buying the fact that it’s only 80000 tons compared to our 115000 times as some type of advantage, most likely it has very little or no armor. Save where the magazine chambers and the reactor are. The catapults which are not angled And will produce inefficiencies Will hopefully be corrected by their next adventure in surface aircraft carriersn. But just like ours these things are big juicy targets The only way to build a force projecting aircraft carrier in the future is going to be By putting it up in the air where I can hide in the clouds or under the water ‘where it can hide under the water.’

  5. Yea I don’t ever believe what comes out of China’s mouth. 99% of the time it’s OVER EXAGGERATED and I’m sure this is as well. The US has had a nearly 80 year lead in aircraft carriers so sorry I don’t think the US panicking!

  6. Peter McCaffrey on

As is always, the devil is in the detail. Being a conventionally powered vessel what is its range and endurance before a re-supply is required? What ship-borne defence systems are mounted on board?
I don’t think the US Navy is panicking about the launch of one ship of unknown capabilities.

  7. I watched an extensive military video production about Chinese aircraft carrier and on its best day it doesn’t even come close to our standard carriers. It’s most advanced stuff is still pretty old and it was built on top of an old commercial tanker chassis so it doesn’t go fast makes wide turns. A real piece of ship in reality.

There’s one thing that the US has over China in regards to Aircraft Carriers. Almost 100 years of carrier operations. That’s something technology can’t give you.

  16. Peter H Dohan on

The “US” is ot panicking; i doubt the average American knows about the PLAN, much less the Fujian. What is hopefully happening is twofold 1. The US rediscovers how to build ships, again 2. The Pentagon integrates the Fujian into its warplan against China. Just hope they do not broadcast it over Signal!

    • The real problem for the US according to itself is actually not some occasional Fujian but the lack of ship-building capacity in America when compared to China. The implications of this are already being felt in their corresponding navies, to the extent that whereas the US navy still is the world’s largest by tonnage, it has fallen to second, behind China, in units. Now such trends are not easy to reverse, considering that US shipbuilding continues to decline and the Chinese one to surge. As the Chinese continue to eclipse the US in numbers and continue to produce ever higher quality units, the implications for the US in global power politics and more specifically the Pacific, could be dire, which is why the US needs all the allies it can get. Nitpicking with allies, a Trump speciality, is not what you would want America to be doing at this time or at any time in the future, for the Old West still has some carriers and a naval establishment and in one swoop. has decided to up its military budget to USD 870 billion. You wouldn’t want that kind of heft to stand idle, or worse, turn against you. Them people have as much money as the US, as much tech and even more people. Do not alienate them.

  18. The US isn’t in panic over a carrier that isn’t even working yet. It’s a conventional carrier, smaller than all US carriers and behind on technology, has less fighter planes.
China has 3 carriers the 1st 2 are basically useless. We have 11 superior ones and 4 on the way.
    Seriously, what a joke.

  19. Todd Tourville on

It’s Chinese, it’ll be breaking down and falling apart real soon. Just like their fighter jets that imitate our F35s.

  20. I don’t really think the US is panicking over this. They have probably known about this for a long time. I am pretty sure that we are capable of handling this

  21. MMCS(SW)(SS) Ken Badoian on

A lot of catching up PLAN. Four USN Carriers building with all the goodies. Miller, Enterprise, Bush, and Clinton.
Also PLAN needs to learn how to operate carrier groups .. nolookie see but out there on the seas. Never catch up. But good information article.

  22. This is a propaganda hit piece. Reliable US Intel says the catapult doesn’t work yet. It’s not as big as the Gerald Ford and needs to refuel every 2 weeks. It’s also not out of testing phase.

  23. Christopher Greene on

The US in not panicking over some 80,000 ton aircraft carrier.we have 11 100,000 ton aircraft carriers and two brand new ones on the way Which is USS Enterprise and USS Doris Miller being constructed as we speak, plus The USS John F. Kennedy/Gerald Ford Class come on duty soon.

  24. US panicking you say? Hardly. The US already launched its 2nd Gerald Ford class carrier with electromagnetic catapults. They accomplished 10,000 launches already which means the US has perfected the system. And there are already building a 3rd and a 4th, and a 5th about to be laid down. And the US has something China can never match, over 100 years in carrier experience, both in peacetime, and many wars and deployments. China a new to the game.

  25. Thanks to the previous administrations for letting the Chinese jack military secrets that let the leaf frog in front of the US.

  26. 27. Aircraft carriers great, but Sub are wave future , if can figure way launch unarmed , unmanned aircraft from a Sub will ne next game changer. Aircraft carriers are very big target.

  28. I would think it’s a little exaggerated but our us technology should be a bit more advanced than there’s you would think anyways but who really knows the real story

  29. The US is not panicked in the slightest. More amused and happy to have an 80K ton target in the water. Chinese tech is absurdly inefficient and unreliable it is amazing it has not caught fire or capsized on launch..

  30. That’s funny I’m sure america is definitely NOT panicking about this brand new Chinese aircraft carrier it’s very likely a big of a hunk of junk just like everything else that’s made in china.

  31. No one is panicking. In fact maybe they will start assisting with freedom of navigation patrols and be useful for something other than producing cheap stuff and stealing intellectual property.

  32. Fucking no one here is scared of your navy or your single aircraft carrier I can assure you the US is still the dominant navy on the planet and shall remains so. Go ahead try and touch our boats, we have a long tradition of “proportional” responses. In case China has forgotten the last 100 years of naval dominance. Fuggin Chinese propaganda at is finest get fucked

  33. It looks like a 1970s US carrier. No threat to us, we have many decades of experience actually using carriers. That alone outweighs any tech advantage and there is no tech advantage for China.

  34. Shouldn’t be underestimated as China continues to grow militarily. But it’s non-nuclear and will be limited in it’s power projection capabilities. But it will still be a dynamic changer in the East China Sea and surrounding area.

Important to note is that it is untested. The U.S. has operated a large fleet of multiple carrier strike groups for decades and the crews, operations, and training over that time has helped work out any snags. Also, we have 11 active carriers. And they are nuclear and unhindered by refueling. So while it is important to stay abreast of China’s activity, it’s a tad exaggerated to say the U.S. is panicking.

  35. Looks like you ran the same few sentences through AI and said change the wording on this. Entire article has like 3 points.

  36. Is US which has 11 proven and tested modern aircraft carriers really panicking with Chinas’ Fujian aircraft carrier?
You are just making exageration, and perhaps just trying to make a hype out of it.

  37. It’s a joke to suggest the US would even remotely panick because China has succeeded in building a modern aircraft carrier. The US is light years ahead of China in virtually every advanced military technology and hardware.

  38. The Last Don on

According to the English, one swallow does not make a summer. What can one aircraft carrier which is still being tested contest against eleven battle hardened aircraft carriers which have been in service to this day in the Gulf of Aden and other war zones?

  39. China’s aircraft carriers haven’t used to any sea/land conflicts, it’s effectivity and durability still remains to be seen.

  40. Is that really an image of the Fujian? There’s only one landing strip, not two. A design that hasn’t been used since the 1940s because it leads to accidents.

  41. This is what USA has doing for decades if not for centuries and all of a sudden China build 80000 ton carrier and show casing it in a drill even without combat experience and not battle tested, and USA that’s battle hardened and combat tested with vast war experience is panicking??

That’s a joke of the millennia.

  42. A single B2 SPIRIT or B21 RAIDER can drop undetected up to 47 JDAM’s on that carrier. 47 500 pound guided bombs will completely destroy that carrier and probably the escorts as well. Not impressed 😉

  43. A total joke. This article is completely misleading and a full propaganda piece. This carrier is not match for US made nuclear powered aircraft carriers. Nice try diddy

  44. Chris Cameron-Gudge on

    Who wrote this?
It is at odds with reports that I have read over the past two years which have said basically that it is a pile of junk. The aeroplane 35 is also not yet fully functioning and it’s stealth capability is shall we say suspect.

  45. zSINK THE THING BEFORE IT HAS A CHANCE TO FIGURE WHAT PROBLEMS MAY NEED FIXING!! BLOW IN OUT OF WATERS NOW….ASAP!! ARE YOU NUTS UP THERE ? YOU JUST GOING TO LET ANYONE WHO WANTS TO WALK ALL OVER US !!
