The Meridian Space constellation promises to deliver superior broadband capacity, as highlighted by Eirik Lie, president of Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace. He emphasized that this new constellation would offer significantly higher capacity compared to existing market offerings. CEO David Wrenn of SpinLaunch further solidified this promise by ensuring that the satellites, developed in collaboration with NanoAvionics, provide a reliable foundation for scaling operations quickly and efficiently. This strategic alliance underscores SpinLaunch’s commitment to transforming satellite communications and setting new standards in the industry.

Will the Meridian Space Constellation Be Catapulted to Space?

SpinLaunch’s unique approach to satellite launching has attracted significant attention, with the company receiving $12 million in funding from Kongsberg NanoAvionics to support the development of the Meridian Space satellites. Despite the initial reliance on traditional rockets, SpinLaunch’s ultimate goal is to deploy its satellites using its revolutionary kinetic launch system. This system, which captured headlines in 2022 by launching a NASA payload into the sky, utilizes a centrifuge technology that promises cost-effectiveness and environmental benefits.

The company’s groundbreaking Suborbital Accelerator has demonstrated the potential of launching payloads at speeds reaching 5,000 mph. However, as SpinLaunch continues to refine its Orbital Launch system, the initial deployment will rely on conventional rocket technology. This dual-track strategy allows SpinLaunch to maintain independent risk profiles while proving the value and performance of its constellation early on. With the first on-orbit demonstrator poised for launch next year, the space community eagerly anticipates how SpinLaunch’s innovations will unfold and redefine the future of satellite deployment.

SpinLaunch Goes Traditional

The announcement of SpinLaunch’s pivot to traditional rockets sparked a wave of discussions across the space community. Eric Berger of Ars Technica expressed skepticism about the decision, questioning whether it signified a strategic shift or a necessary adaptation. In response, CEO David Wrenn clarified that the initial use of traditional rockets is a pragmatic step to accelerate the deployment of the constellation, while the kinetic launch technology continues to undergo development.

Sustainability Reports: Key to Transparent and Responsible Management

Wrenn emphasized that the orbital launch system and the deployment of the constellation are parallel endeavors, each with independent critical paths and risk profiles. This approach allows SpinLaunch to demonstrate value and performance early on, building towards its long-term vision of revolutionizing satellite launches. While questions remain about the timing of the Orbital Launch system’s readiness, SpinLaunch’s commitment to its kinetic launch technology remains unwavering, promising a future where satellites can be launched more efficiently and sustainably.

The Road Ahead for SpinLaunch

As SpinLaunch embarks on this ambitious journey, the road ahead is filled with both opportunities and challenges. The company’s original plan to operate its Orbital Launcher faced hurdles, yet its collaboration with Portland State University demonstrated the resilience of its technology. By proving that a CubeSat can endure the extreme G-forces required for its launch system, SpinLaunch showcased the potential of its innovative approach.

Despite the challenges, SpinLaunch’s vision of a future where satellite launches are more cost-effective and environmentally friendly remains compelling. With the continued development of its Orbital Launch system and the strategic deployment of traditional rockets, SpinLaunch is poised to make a significant impact in the space industry. How will SpinLaunch’s bold strategies and technological advancements influence the future of satellite launches, and what new frontiers will it explore next?

    • Your title is misleading. Spin launch hasn’t launched anything. SpaceX isn’t worried about a theoretical company. Once they launch 136 launches in a year with a 98% success rate they might pay a small amount if attention. This is a typical libtard propaganda puppet.

      • Came here to say this. The article is click-bait garbage that is either intended to disparage Musk, or prop up Spin. It’s laughable that SpaceX is threatened by a company looking to launch satellites with a technology that hasn’t yet worked, and will instead rely on rockets, of which they own none.

        • Elon Musk, his brain, his extrapolate, real world inferential applications, lack of ego, humanitarian.Fuck, woke sons of bitches, jealous, illegals ,accomplish nothing negroes, commie blood sucking faggits and lesbos, all of them need to proceed to west hell, immediately.Have a nice day faggits

        • I was going to launch a personal attack on Rosemary the writer and ridicule her claim to be a journalist but it is often the case that the author does not write the headline. Her article seems to be fair and has no relationship to the headline. The headline writer is hands down an idiot that doesn’t comprehend the article.

Absolutely correct. Another misleading headline…anything to attract all the Musk haters. Well, sorry folks. No meat in this article. Panic mode? Not in at least another fifty years, ha!

        • All hyperbole they have not launched one satellite not even ran one in space test! They also don’t even own a rocket to use for their launch it’s Disneyland stuff

      • Exactly, the author should be ashamed at their journalistic prowess. The whole thing gaslighting fear-mongering far left liberal BS.

      • A September 2022 test flight successfully carried payloads from NASA, Airbus US, Cornell Engineering’s Space Systems Design Studio (SSDS), and Outpost. The flight followed the trajectory that had been laid in for it. After the flight all contents of the payload were inspected and found to be in good order.

      • Do you see a single libtard here praising the journalism? Nobody thinks that clickbait titles like this are okay. Claiming that Democrats or liberals approve of this kind of BS would probably make you a republitard, but I will try to give you the benefit of the doubt.

    • Hold on! Both SpaceX AND SpinLaunch need to fear ME! I am fully qualified because I took up space in school.
I recently threw a FULL can of beer 10 mph on my first try. The next day I threw TWO FULL cans twice as fast, reaching an astonishing 20 mph!
So, in only two days of development, I doubled my payload AND velocity. Do the math losers – by doubling every day, in about two weeks, I will certainly be launching over 15,000 cans to orbital velocity.
The only obstacle that I am facing is funding. If any of you can help, please send me more beer.
      Thank you.

    • The title is completely misleading, they haven’t launched anything yet. SpaceX on the other hand has launched 471 operational times with only 3 failures from the Falcon 9. SpaceX has the current record for satellites launched (more than 8000) and most satellites launched at once (143).

    • I was going to launch a personal attack on Rosemary the writer and ridicule her claim to be a journalist but it is often the case that the author does not write the headline. Her article seems to be fair and has no relationship to the headline. The headline writer is hands down an idiot that doesn’t comprehend the article.

    • If it works, I like the idea of the centrifugal launch system. I do however suspect there are obstacles that may be insurmountable. Particularly the need for a ballistic projectile shape combined with imparted spin on the projectile.
The massive g loads I feel are more readily addressed.

    • Like most modern “news” sources, the (uthor and/or editor have no interest in accurate representation, but instead rely on clickbait titles to drive hits. Let’s just say I won’t be subscribing and I am blocking you from my Google feed since that is all I can do to show my disapproval. The title implies that the launches have actually occurred, which they have not, nor have they even been scheduled. And other commenters please don’t make this political. Most people, like myself, probably came here looking for news that would be interesting to people of any political leaning if it was actually news.

      • Rockets are hard. Things are bound to happen. SpaceX launched 138 times in 2024 only losing two. That’s 98.8% success. NASA has a launch success rate of 95% id say they are doing just fine.

Traditional rockets mean one use only rockets equals lotsa money. Meanwhile SpaceX is reusing its rocket launchers up to 19 times, over and over. Same goes for the Dragon capsules. No other space aeronautics company is anywhere near approaching this achievement. This article sounds like it was written by another wishful anti-Trumper Musk hater. Well, I will believe in this heretofore unheard of company when they actually succeed in doing something and not just talking about it. As they say: actions speak louder than words.

  1. Awesome! What’s the timeline? This will be interesting to see. Too bad SpaceX is going to larger satellites and to the giant Starship.

    • Stewart Pepper on

The headline says they have launched these satellites. The article is clear they hope to. The left will even lie (which is their standard operating principle) to try to destroy Musk. “Sustainability Times” will never get me to read another article. It’s a propaganda piece.

      • Do you think “the left” have anything to do with this article? Maybe you haven’t noticed but most of “the left” are interested in facts, data, and well reasoned arguments, not conspiracy theories and uninformed opinions. Yes there are libtards among us, but even they don’t approve of the blatantly false clickbait title of this article.

  2. DREAM ON. The dream is easy, implementation is HARD. Starlink has 4000 satellites in space. They are being upgraded to high broadband. These guys plan to use 250 satellites….. Ha ha ha

    • The headline says it all: “Elon Musk in panic mode”. Says who? Did Rlon say anything to support this claim.

    • If it works, I like the idea of the centrifugal launch system. I do however suspect there are obstacles that may be insurmountable. Particularly the need for a ballistic projectile shape combined with imparted spin on the projectile.

  3. Sounds like hype to raise funds for their project. The fact they are not using the tech there company was orgnaily funded to create is a sign that their tech has problems. And to brage on setting a new record for one launch deplomets a year in the future it total hype. No mention new technolgy tey devloped to be able to break this record is very telling.

  5. Embarrassingly stupid headline.
They haven’t launched a single satellite and will be half a decade before they’re even competing if this quirky company doesn’t fold. I doubt there’s proper funding. These are the weirdos trying to slingshot satellites into space without success and now they’re going to try and play catch up with regular rockets they don’t have experience building or operating.

  6. “Panic mode” ? Red flag words translate into sensational , biased and opinionated reporting. No need to read further.

  7. Clickbait headline, and a garbage one. Nothing has been launched, the total mass of each satellite has not been defined – compared to the total mass of SpaceX record, and if we are going to compare theoretical deployments why not compare it to what starship will be delivering? Is it because it can deliver almost 6x what a falcon 9 can?

  8. Click bait and fake news, spin launch hasn’t launched anything yet, they will be launching these on conventional rockets so it will be as environmentally friendly as any other launch. But hey there’s nothing wrong with competition. The article is biased and misleading.

  9. Yourhuckleberry on

Oh look, an anti-Musk writing a satirical article with 2 brain cells. This hasn’t even come to fruition. Just another pipe dream of a company who thinks they have Space X number. Funny part is, Space X is holding a lot of cards close to it’s chest.

  10. If it works, I like the idea of the centrifugal launch system. I do however suspect there are obstacles that may be insurmountable. Particularly the need for a ballistic projectile shape combined with imparted spin on the projectile.

As someone who watches the space x launches several times a week from my front yard I was wondering how I missed this companies launches, guessing they were launched somewhere other than Florida only to realize I assumed the Headline was factual.
